With the winter snowbird season in full swing, TripShock.com offers some fun things to do for seniors visiting the area.

Destin is ready for another "Snowbird Season". Snowbirds are tourists (typically seniors) from northern states that come down for a few months during the winter to get out of the cold weather. Since most attraction and tour companies close down for the winter, there isn't a wide selection like there is in the summer. Here are TripShock.com's recommendations for some great things to do.
1) Dolphin Cruise - Join Olin Marler Charters for a two hour narrated dolphin cruise. See wild bottlenose dolphins and other marine wildlife. Cruises are offered daily and seniors discounts are available.
2) Air Force Museum - Just outside Eglin Air Force Base is the Airforce Museum in Fort Walton Beach. Get a first hand look at historic aircraft that was active in WWII and Vietnam.
3) Sunquest Dinner Cruise - Spend an evening with one of the finest restaurants in town. Enjoy a 3 course meal and live entertainment aboard Destin's only dinner cruise.
4) Private Sailing Charter- Go sailing on the Destin Harbor and spend an intimate or casual evening on the water. See the Destin sunset like never before. Bring some wine and light snacks and take in the sea air.
5) Bike Rental - Rent a bike and take a ride down one of the many trails or side roads in the Destin area. Old scenic 98 is a great ride along the beach and has bike friendly lanes.

<a10:updated>2012-01-25T16:33:52-05:00</a10:updated>

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

The Village of Baytowne Wharf will be the place to be this February 18-21. With Mardi Gras quickly approaching, you won't want to miss out on all of the exciting events in The Village.

Feb 18- The 23rd Annual Sandestin Gumbo Cook-off is back at The Village of Baytowne Wharf this year. Guests can sample gumbo and vote for their favorite as People's Choice.

Celebrity judges will hold blind judging contests for the "Area's Best" awards for gumbo. The award for Best Display, which goes to the business or restaurant with the most innovative booth, will also be announced.

Ticket holders will enjoy family entertainment and live music throughout the entire weekend.

For more festival information & to purchase tickets visit sandestingumbofestival.com

Feb 19- Don't miss the 9th annual Mardi Gras dog parade! This year's theme is Cruisin' Canines: Fetch a Wave!

The streets will be filled with costumed dogs, with their sunglasses and swimsuits, and their humans throwing a myriad of throws, beads, and parade favors. Themed convertibles, small floats (especially pulled by masters), golf carts, bicycles, and decorated wagons will be everywhere and Mardi Gras music will fill the air!

The Village of Baytowne Wharf's Mardi Gras dog parade is one of the premier canine events on the Emerald Coast with members of the four-pawed community coming far and wide to participate.

Proceeds from this event will benefit Alaqua Animal Refuge.

Feb 21- Prepare to let your hair down on what many call the most festive day of the year, Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday.

“Laissez les bon temps rouler” (let the good times roll) with the 10th annual Fat Tuesday Baytowne Bash Parade rolling through Sandestin. Yell “throw me something mister” as unique and colorful floats, golf carts, and pick-up trucks roll down the streets and marchers dressed up in all their Mardi Gras best shower parade-goers with a barrage of beads, moon pies, and other trinkets.

The post-parade celebration continues into the night with street performers, “throws” tossed from balconies on Main St, and parties at various Baytowne establishments.

Why Go: Midwestern and Southern families flock to "The World's Luckiest Fishing Village" for its white sands and frequent sunshine. Less tropical than other Florida hotspots, Destin sees seasonal shifts in the weather and tourist traffic. Temps, visitor volume and room rates are at their highest in the summer. However, Destin is one of Florida's most affordable beach towns at any time of the year.

Best Things to Do in Destin
Beach, beach, beach! Most Destin visitors come here for that sole reason. The gorgeous white sand competes with those at other Florida destinations farther south. However, if you stay on the beach, you'll miss out on the other attractions. Swim in the warm emerald waters of the Gulf, take a swing on the world-class golf courses or cast a line off a pier or a boat. The activity will only help you gain a greater appreciation for Destin's natural splendor.

When it comes time to pay for the electricity used to power his yard-full of Christmas lights and lawn ornaments, Andy Murphy says that’s one bill he’s never seen.

“And I don’t want to… I let my wife take care of all that,” he said.

The residents of Sea Oats Drive have made it an annual tradition to transform their street into a winter wonderland lined with peppermint swirled candies. Candy Cane Lane, as it’s called, is the brainchild of Murphy and his best friend, Bob Dudley.

To see more photos from Candy Cane Lane, CLICK HERE.

For the past seven years, the two neighbors have been ringing in the New Year with a little Christmas competition that always spills out onto their front lawns.

But long before Murphy and Dudley moved to town, the early residents of Sea Oats Drive always had just a little extra Christmas spirit.

George Chaknis was one of the first three families on the street in 1973. That year, he was one of four homes that placed paper bags with candles in them out on the sidewalk on Christmas Eve night. The luminaries eventually caught on and the entire subdivision participated.

“The neighborhood wasn’t lit up like it is now… So, when people would drive by, they would shut off their lights to get the whole effect,” Chaknis said. But a wet and windy winter put an end to the tradition.

“Candles kept going out. Bags caught on fire. I think it turned people off to it,” he said.

As enthusiasm for the luminaries faded, Dudley and his family moved into town and brought with them a “white Christmas.” They decked their house out in all clear lights.

“But then Andy came along, and it just exploded,” Dudley said.

When the Murphy’s moved onto Sea Oats Drive from Memphis, Tenn., seven years ago, Andy brought with him a love of Christmas. And he knew he had moved to the right place when Dudley introduced himself by asking if he liked to decorate for the holidays.

“I was like, ‘Yes, I’m home,’ ” Murphy said.

That first year, Murphy had a sled with reindeer and a couple bears, and Dudley had a few candy canes in his yard. The two decided to grow the friendly competition in a street-wide affair. They named it Candy Cane Lane, and even had signs made.

“This is the place you come if you want to see Christmas decorations… We set the bar high,” Dudley said with chuckle.

To prepare the yard and house for this year’s festivities, Murphy hauled in six 14-foot trailers worth of decorations the weekend after Thanksgiving. And for the past couple weeks, he’s been outside tinkering with his toys and perfecting the layout for his annual company Christmas party and open house.

“By the time everything is up, I get to spend about a week enjoying it,” he said.

Murphy’s house is equipped with a homemade whirly bucket carousel that uses the motor from his wife’s chicken rotisserie, a train track, a smoking train station, an icy pond, a snow machine, and much more.

In addition to new lawn ornaments, Murphy, also known by his friends as Andy Claus, decided to transform his home into a gingerbread house this year. He attached brown plywood siding to the frame and used spray foam to create icing along the edges. There’s even giant “candies” hanging from the windows.

But the decorations don’t stop at the front lawn. Even the back yard is a North Pole retreat complete with Santa on a motorcycle, a net of lights above the pool, and Christmas birds.

“I wouldn’t say it’s an addiction. It’s just a lot of fun,” Murphy said.

Down the street at Dudley’s house, you won’t see any of the same decorations. That’s one of the rules of the decorating competition. His lawn looks like a yard-sized Christmas village. On the roof is Santa in tractor. But for Dudley, the most important part of the layout is the nativity scene.

“That’s what it’s all about,” he said.

As 5 o’clock approaches, cars begin to roll into the neighborhood. Kids hang their heads out the car windows, families grab pictures and people point out their favorite things.

“If you sit out here for an hour or two, you’d know exactly why we do it,” Murphy said. “Watching the kid’s expressions — you can’t put a price on that.”

November 27, 2011 8:00 AM
Sam Seevers; Mayor’s Message
As far back as Destin’s Christmas pasts are recorded, Christmas has been a time in which our entire community gathers for celebratory fellowship. William T. Marler, commonly known as “Uncle Billy,” is credited with establishing the first Community Christmas Party in 1915. He was also Destin’s first Santa.

With no electricity in Destin until 1937, the community’s Christmas tree was decorated with strips of popcorn and paper chains, and was lit thanks to many candles. Later in the evening when the children sang along to “Jingle Bells,” Santa Claus would make his grand entrance.

As Destin grew, so did the Community Christmas Celebration, carried on through generations simply because of tradition. In later years, the party moved to the Destin Community Center, where many elements of the old traditions are still followed today, such as the city of Destin’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, always held the Thursday after Thanksgiving. This year will mark the 25th Annual Christmas Tree lighting and will take place at 6 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Destin Community Center.

A couple more recent traditions in Destin include the Annual Christmas Parade and the Holiday on the Harbor Boat Parade. This year will mark Destin’s 26th Annual Christmas Parade. Beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, this parade will travel down Harbor Blvd and end at Stahlman Ave. On Dec. 4, the 25th Holiday on the Harbor Boat Parade will commence at 5 p.m. Festivities will be held along Destin harbor all afternoon, and fireworks will light the sky over East Pass with radiant brilliance after the parade has concluded.

Our town has grown in age, technology, and, of course, in population, but one thing that never seems to change is the sense of community and tradition that continues to envelop the city each and every holiday season. Some traditions have been altered and new traditions begin, but we always gather together with the peace and goodwill of the holidays. Many thanks go out to the countless volunteers who keep the history and heritage of our great city alive.

<a10:updated>2011-12-08T15:12:18-05:00</a10:updated>

Sun Bathing Deer!

Craig Carper took this photo on a beach near Panama City last Friday, Nov. 25, 2011. The deer was getting some sun by the pier at Camp Helen State Park. A park ranger says the deer had been swimming in the Gulf on and off all day and in between swims would lie down on the beach to rest.

<a10:updated>2011-12-03T17:22:14-05:00</a10:updated>

12 Nights of Lights

For the month of December, enjoy a festive light show in the Events Plaza set to your favorite holiday music every Friday and Saturday leading up to Christmas at 6, 7, & 8pm.

Ingredients
2 store bought pie dough rounds
1/3 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
1 tablespoons butter
3/4 cup pecans, chopped
3/4 cup light brown sugar
1 whole egg
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
10-15 whole pecans for garnish
1 whole egg, beaten for egg wash

Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Place one of the pie dough rounds onto a pizza stone or a sheet pan, flouring bottom generously.
With the other dough round, cut into 1 1/2 inch strips with a fluted cutter, and make long twists. Set on floured surface.
In a double boiler, melt the chocolate chips and the butter.
Add the pecans, sugar, 1 egg, corn syrup, and vanilla extract.
Pour the chocolate mixture onto the round dough, leaving 2 inches around edges.
Place the dough twists on top of the filling, criss crossing, making a lattice pattern.
Fold the edges over and crimp making a pretty border.
In each empty square of lattice, place a whole pecan.
Brush the egg wash over all the crust.
Bake for 28 - 30 minutes, or until crust is golden brown.

Autumn along northwestern Florida’s 24-mile-long Emerald Coast brings fewer tourists and lower, “value season” rates to the wide, sugar-white beaches of Destin, Fort Walton, and Okaloosa Island. The summer-worthy temperatures (highs in the 80s, lows in the 60s) are ideal for swimming in clear, emerald-green Gulf of Mexico waters or for golfing the more than 1,080 manicured, championship holes. October’s monthlong Destin Fishing Rodeo draws more than 30,000 saltwater anglers to the self-proclaimed World’s Luckiest Fishing Village to compete for daily, weekly, and overall prizes. Watch the daily weigh-ins of king mackerel, marlin, sailfish, and other game fish on the docks at A.J.'s Seafood & Oyster Bar. Sample fresh-from-the-docks seafood at historic Staff’s Restaurant, the Emerald Coast’s first eatery, which is housed in a 1913 barrel-shaped Fort Walton warehouse and open daily for dinner. The signature Broiled Skillet—grouper, shrimp, scallops, and crabmeat stuffing drizzled with cheese—comes with baskets of fresh-baked wheat bread.

Today they featured the Aspen Colorado area and it aired about 8:30 CST.

Tomorrow's show will feature Destin, with Sandestin resident and Food Network Chef Emeril Lagasse as the host. You may vote on line at the web site of www.abcnews.go.com/gma and then click on Destin. Be careful as it counts your vote quickly and if you drag your cursor over the incorrect block, it may cast an incorrect vote.

Someone commented today that they did not see how we could have any more visitors to the area than we had this summer. It has been a record year. However, please notify your contacts and ask them to tune in to the program and cast their vote.

In addition, Henderson Park Inn has some new guest. Recently a female loggerhead turtle laid her eggs near the Henderson Park Inn. The Inn has placed a high resolution infrared camera to capture the hatching and exit of over 100 baby turtles. They are expected to hatch between August 14-16th and can be viewed on the web site of www.HendersonParkInn.com and click on web cam and turtle web cam.

Today is was also announced that Destin area was selected as one of Forbes top 20 Geekiest Cities in America. They classify "Geeks" as "any workers with a bachelor's level of knowledge and education in science or engineering related fields or workers in occupations that require some degree of technical knowledge or training." I have been going to the beaches on a daily basis and I have not seen a large amount of black horned rimed glasses on the beach.

In any event, just another promotion for the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village."

Have a great day.

Guests can be confident that when they book with Destin Getaways or on www.destingetaways.com, that they will be staying in one of the company's 75+ professionally managed properties.

However, internet scammers have started stealing legitimate listings and posting them fraudulently. This is of great concern to our reputable company. To warn consumers of vacation rental scams on other websites, Alexis Ferrell (a member of our Guest Services team), submitted a press release to WJHG of Panama City, FL. News Channel 7 then featured the following story on the 5 o'clock news on July 6, 2011:

Scammers target vacationers looking for a good deal

The scammers are ripping-off unsuspecting vacationers. Scam artists are copying pictures and property information from legitimate rental agencies and reposting them on rental sites for less than half the cost.

An old scam has resurfaced here in the panhandle.

The scammes are ripping-off unsuspecting vacationers.

Scam artists are copying pictures and property information from legitimate rental agencies and reposting them on rental sites for less than half the cost.

Instead of a great deal, the renters get scammed.

"If it's too good to be true, it probably is," said John Paulsen of Crye-Leike Realty.

John Paulsen of Destin Getaways has seen the rip-off first hand.

Scammers take legitimate rental property from his site, and post them on petvacationhomes.com- similar to craiglist for vacationers with pets.

The victims wired their money, only to find the property was already rented when they arrived.

Paulen says the website is credible, but the person listing the property may not be.

"These are national websites anybody can post a property on them because these websites don't ask you for proof of ownership or anything," said Paulsen.

Paulsen says it's an easy way for scammers to make a quick buck.

But there are warning signs.

"If they are asking for a wire transfer- that's a red flag right there," said Paulsen.

Instead, use a credit card. Also, rent from a professional management company like Destin Getaways and contact the Better Business Bureau.

Prospective vacationers can also check sites like scamwarners.com and fraudwatchers.org for a history of scams.

<a10:updated>2011-07-06T14:56:39-04:00</a10:updated>

Destin Getaways Cares For Consumers, Warns Against Scammers #1

Destin Getaways is a member of the Better Business Bureau and is located in Destin, Florida. To warn consumers of vacation rental scams on other websites, Alexis Ferrell (a member of our Guest Services team), submitted a press release to WMC-TV of Memphis, TN. Action News 5 featured the following story on the 5 o'clock news on June 29, 2011:

Video source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbB8RAXRhjw

MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) - Internet scammers have crafted an elegant scheme to steal cash from Mid-Southerners renting homes in Destin, Florida.

Imagine driving with your family to Destin, Florida for a fun summer vacation. But when you arrive at your rental home, you learn that you're the victim of an Internet scam and out of thousands of dollars.

"It's very disturbing to find out that people are actually doing it," said John Paulsen of Destin Getaways.

According to Paulsen, two families have already been duped, after internet scammers stole two of his legitimate listings on DestinGetaways.com and posted fake listings on legitimate vacation rental websites.

"They have taken these properties and posted them on some of these other websites fraudulently," he said.

One family of 20 drove all the way from Arkansas to find that the real owner already rented the home to someone else.

"They paid $2,500 to rent it and find out that they're not getting the house because they had been scammed on the Internet," Paulsen said.

What's really unnerving is renters' hands are tied because the scammers are hard to track. In fact, some are out of the country.

Red flags include when scammers require a wire transfer or cashier's check, do not have a working telephone number, or may make spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors.

"I've got my website now where you cannot copy and paste anything off of it," Paulsen said. "But I'm sure there are a lot of others that you can, so buyer beware."

If you're not sure about a company, call the Better Business Bureau. And listen to your gut - if it seems like the deal of a lifetime, it could be a scam.

SANDESTIN — Beachgoers huddled around a large pile of sand Monday morning with phones and cameras in hand as the white sand started taking shape.

Approximately 80 tons of sand were being sprayed with water, shaped and sculpted to create the “Bigger Than Life Brochure” for Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Thomas Koet, who is the current world champion in sand sculpting, and two members of the Sandsastional Sand Sculptors team were brought down to capture the essence of Sandestin through the large sand sculpture.

“We were coming up with ideas on what we could do to tell people the beaches are great and they still have their beauty,” said Steven Scharfer, vice president of resort operations at Sandestin. “What a great way to showcase the sand.”

The sandsculpting was timed to be completed Wednesday, which will be the one-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Koet said his team was given free reign to create an image that shows the beauty of Sandestin.

“I don’t see any effects from the spill,” Koet said while taking a break from sculpting. “We want to show all the fun things you can do here and tell everyone you need to come back.”

Jill Harris, a member of Koet’s team, said the art of sculpting sand is never easy and always different based on the sand they are using. The sugar-white sand of the Emerald Coast, she said, is more challenging than most because of how circular it is.

“The sand will tell you what it wants to do; you just have to listen,” Harris said. “This sand doesn’t want to go straight up; it wants to lean. So we learn to work with what we have.”

Koet said to be a world-champion sculptor, or just to make the perfect sandcastle, there are certain keys to remember.

“You have to start with nice, clean sand,” he advised. “Use a lot, lot of water — dig a hole and use the wet sand — then you can start with your hands and move on to use household items like a spoon, melon baller or a shovel to make shapes.”

The sculpture will likely hold its shape for two weeks to a month, Harris said. She said rain can be a factor in the deterioration of the sculpture, but wind is the usual culprit.

Lisa Oliver of Chattanooga, Tenn., stared from the boardwalk as the sculptors worked on details of the Baytowne Wharf section. The honeymooner was with her husband, Henry, and said Monday was her first time seeing the beach.

“It’s amazing,” Oliver said. “I don’t even know how to build a sandcastle. The beach is much cleaner than I thought; it’s really pretty. I wouldn’t imagine there had ever been an oil spill here.”

by Allison Yii

BAM! World-renowned chef and Food Network star Emeril Lagasse pulled in a whopper of a wahoo during the Sandestin Celebration Fishing Tournament at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort this past weekend. Lagasse, who listed his residence as Miramar Beach, landed a 60.3-pounder while fishing aboard the Ole Miss with Capt. Brand Benton. His catch placed first in the Wahoo Division and was worth $1,285.72 in prize money.

Aloha!

Located on the beachside of Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort, Luau is a pair of newly constructed high-rises with a Polynesian flare.

The Luau entry foyer arouses visions of the South Pacific, with its slate flooring and bamboo and rattan ceiling.

The lush tropical landscaping of the Luau pool vicinity celebrates the spirit of the Polynesian Islands. Water cascades down from volcanic rocks into the 4,000 square foot saltwater pool; jets of water gush up from the kiddy pool creating a fountain that is sure to entertain the kids; and the bubbling hot tub invites those who seek a warm, therapeutic jacuzzi. Don’t forget to grab a frozen margarita or strawberry daiquiri and a tasty sandwich from the poolside tiki bar (seasonal).

As you probably know, a luau is a traditional Hawaiian feast featuring delicious eats from the South Pacific. We strongly recommend that you have your own luau at Luau, but with a touch of Destin! The onsite family BBQ facility features stainless steel gas grills... perfect for grilling your favorite cut of meat from Publix or those fillets from the grouper you caught earlier out in the Gulf.

Don’t forget about the sunset deck! Located on the 11th floor of Tower 2, the sunset deck offers spellbinding panoramic views of the Gulf of Mexico, Baytowne Golf Course and the renowned Sandestin coastline.

             View From Sunset Deck

Ellipticals, treadmills, stationary bikes and free weights await those who want to take advantage of the onsite Luau fitness center, which is conveniently located on the ground floor of Tower 2.

The units are elegantly decorated with furnishings fit for King Kamehameha himself. The kitchens feature marble countertops, black appliances and a breakfast bar.

When you stay at the Luau, you will be ensured Kaiolohia... which means “tranquil peace of mind” in Hawaiian. It really doesn't get much better than this.

Destin Getaways offers studio, one bedroom and two bedroom units at the Luau. We have units on floors 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 16. Please call one of our reservation specialists today to book your Luau vacation. (866) 356-5946

Cheers,

J.D.

Mighty oil-eating microbes help clean up the Gulf

By JOHN CAREY, environmental writer

Where is all the oil? Nearly two weeks after BP finally capped the biggest oil spill in U.S. history, the oil slicks that once spread across thousands of miles of the Gulf of Mexico have largely disappeared. Nor has much oil washed up on the sandy beaches and marshes along the Louisiana coast. And the small cleanup army in the Gulf has only managed to skim up a tiny fraction of the millions of gallons of oil spilled in the 100 days since the Deepwater Horizon rig went up in flames.

So where did the oil go? "Some of the oil evaporates," explains Edward Bouwer, professor of environmental engineering at Johns Hopkins University. That’s especially true for the more toxic components of oil, which tend to be very volatile, he says. Jeffrey W. Short, a scientist with the environmental group Oceana, told the New York Times that as much as 40 percent of the oil might have evaporated when it reached the surface. High winds from two recent storms may have speeded the evaporation process.

Although there were more than 4,000 boats involved in the skimming operations, those cleanup crews may have only picked up a small percentage of the oil so far. That’s not unusual; in previous oil spills, crews could only scoop up a small amount of oil. "It’s very unusual to get more than 1 or 2 percent," says Cornell University ecologist Richard Howarth, who worked on the Exxon Valdez spill. Skimming operations will continue in the Gulf for several weeks.

Some of the oil has sunk into the sediments on the ocean floor. Researchers say that’s where the spill could do the most damage. But according to a report in Wednesday’s New York Times, "federal scientists [have determined] the oil [is] primarily sitting in the water column and not on the sea floor."

Perhaps the most important cause of the oil’s disappearance, some researchers suspect, is that the oil has been devoured by microbes. The lesson from past spills is that the lion’s share of the cleanup work is done by nature in the form of oil-eating bacteria and fungi. The microbes break down the hydrocarbons in oil to use as fuel to grow and reproduce. A bit of oil in the water is like a feeding frenzy, causing microbial populations to grow exponentially.

Typically, there are enough microbes in the ocean to consume half of any oil spilled in a month or two, says Howarth. Such microbes have been found in every ocean of the world sampled, from the Arctic to Antarctica. But there are reasons to think that the process may occur more quickly in the Gulf than in other oceans.

Microbes grow faster in the warmer water of the Gulf than they do in, say, the cool waters off Alaska, where the Exxon Valdez spill occurred. Moreover, the Gulf is hardly pristine. Even before humans started drilling for oil in the Gulf — and spilling lots of it — oil naturally seeped into the water. As a result, the Gulf evolved a rich collection of petroleum-loving microbes, ready to pounce on any new spill. The microbes are clever and tough, observes Samantha Joye, microbial geochemist at the University of Georgia. Joye has shown that oxygen levels in parts of the Gulf contaminated with oil have dropped. Since microbes need oxygen to eat the petroleum, that’s evidence that the microbes are hard at work.

The controversial dispersant used to break up the oil as it gushed from the deep-sea well may have helped the microbes do their work. Microbes can more easily consume small drops of oil than big ones. And there is evidence the microbes like to munch on the dispersant as well.

It is still far too early to know how much damage the spill has done — and may still be doing — to the environment. Tar balls continue to wash up on beaches. And the risk of a leak remains, until the well is permanently capped sometime in the next few weeks.

<a10:updated>2010-08-01T13:48:27-04:00</a10:updated>

Greetings From Gulf Winds East! It's no surprise that our phones have been ringing off the hook with guests anxious to book their next Destin getaway. People have been changing their minds about having their Fourth of July vacations in Colorado and the Northeast now that they realize the oil won't be ruining their beach vacation. It's no surprise to us.
We had our work cut out for us, so we took the 40 foot Formula cabin cruiser. As we languished in the cool breeze and Florida sun, we began to brainstorm. Then I asked, "So why is now a good time to visit Destin?"

"The beaches are less crowded even though there is no oil. Heck, our beaches never looked more inviting!," Jack explained as he squeezed a lime into his ice cold Corona Light.

"The stores are having awesome sales! There are bargains everywhere!," Michelle answered as she sipped her mojito.

"Plus, Crye★Leike Coastal is offering discounts on their vacation rentals. They even have a risk-free vacation policy!," John noted as he ate one of Fat Tuesday's delicious hot wings.

For three hours, we spouted off reason after reason after reason. Unfortunately, we concluded that now is not a good time to visit Destin.

Now is the BEST time.

June 17, 2010

The world's most beautiful fishing village will not disappoint. Destin's sugary white beaches and emerald green waters are so pristine, they fringe the border between fairy tale and reality. Sure it's a little overcast today, but I'd rather be in Destin on a cloudy day than in any other town on a clear one.

Check out today's beach photos, brought to you by Crye-Leike Coastal Realty.

You will be happy to know that Walton County is taking action to prevent the oil spill from ruining our beaches. In Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort, they are already digging a trench in the sand at the Gulf's edge. This will tremendously ease the clean-up process. Although Destin is located in Okaloosa County, most of Crye-Leike Coastal's rentals are in fact in Walton County. You can be rest assured that action is already underway as the oil nears our beaches.

Today, the beaches are still open and, as you can see, the water was particularly beautiful. These photos were taken this morning about 11:00AM from my blackberry.

Cheers,

Symptoms include:

1) vivid visions of yourself sitting under an umbrella on our sugar white beaches

2) a sudden hankering for a grilled grouper sandwich from Harbor Docks

3) a severe urge to swim in our emerald green waters

4) an uncontrollable desire to call (866) 356-5946 to book your next Destin getaway

For those of you who visited Destin during this past holiday weekend, many of your friends will be asking "How was your Destin Memorial Day vacation"?

A picture is worth a thousand words, so you can just show them this aerial photo of Crab Island on Memorial Day 2010.

In the center of the photo, you'll see the Destin Bridge linking Okaloosa Island with Destin. To the north of the bridge, is a cluster of boats moored at Crab Island and to the south you can see boats coming to and from Destin Harbor.

Your friends will be jealous when you say, "I was there... and BOY, was it a blast!"

Please keep checking our blog because we will be posting an aerial video within the next few days.

Cheers,

J.D.

That's right, you're getting this update live from the sugar white sands!

Right now, I'm down at the public beach access at Ed Walline Park. We just finished playing beach paddleball and are about to test the waters. It's a yellow flag today, so we'll probably try out the boogie boards as well.

Before I go, I'll upload a photo of the beach from the BlackBerry so you know exactly what I'm talking about!

Later this evening, we are going to my friend's birthday at the Crab Trap. The Crab Trap is a great place to play beach volleyball and build sand castles with the kids, while of course taking an occasional break to grab a frosty beverage from the outside patio!

Don't forget the concert tonight at the Village of Baytowne Wharf from 7 - 9PM. We hope to see you there!

Cheers,

Today is the first day of snapper season. There are already reports of charter boats returning to Destin harbor with some beauties!! Earlier this morning at the docks, there was a young woman showing off the 12 pounder she caught! Mackerel seemed to be a popular catch as well.

For those who don't enjoy fishing, our beautiful beaches are still calling your name!

Tomorrow at the Village Baytowne Wharf in Sandestin, The Deb Callahan Band will be playing from 7 - 9PM as part of the Wednesday Night Concert Series. You won't want to miss out on a night of blues and soul! You know... there's always something going on in Destin. This little town truly is the crown jewel of the Emerald Coast.

Hope to see you in the Village tomorrow!

Cheers,

Today, there were myriad boats - from the largest cruiser yachts to the tiniest dinghies - that gathered near the Destin bridge to celebrate Memorial Day.

There was even a tiny dinghy (traveling from boat to boat) selling ice cream and hot boiled peanuts!

Looking out at Crab Island is surreal - there is so much activity! Giant inflatable inner tubes and slides, tons of jet skis, people playing football and throwing the frisbee.. and some people even brought their canine friends!

The greatest part was.... no oil! Check it out - beautiful isn't it? Man, what a sight!

Cheers,

As you can see from our occupancy, visitors are still coming to spend the holiday on our famous beaches. The oil spill has not had any effect on the Destin coastline and there are plenty of events to celebrate those honorable men and women who have died while in the military service.

This Saturday on Destin Harbor, there will be a Memorial Day Concert Celebration with fireworks, music, children's activities and more!

Top kill' stops gulf oil leak for now, official says

Officials are cautionary but say drilling fluid has blocked oil and gas temporarily. Engineers plan to begin pumping in cement and then will seal the well.

A image taken from a BP live video feed shows activity during the "top kill" procedure, which is being used to stop the flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. (Reuters / May 27, 2010)

Reporting from Houma, La. — Engineers have at least temporarily stopped the flow of oil and gas into the Gulf of Mexico from a gushing BP well, the federal government's top oil-spill commander, U.S. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, said Thursday morning.

The "top kill" effort, launched Wednesday afternoon by industry and government engineers, had pumped enough drilling fluid to block oil and gas spewing from the well, Allen said. The pressure from the well was very low, he said, but persisting. The top kill effort is not complete, officials caution.

Once engineers had reduced the well pressure to zero, they were to begin pumping cement into the hole to entomb the well. To help in that effort, he said, engineers also were pumping some debris into the blowout preventer at the top of the well.

As of early Thursday morning, neither government nor BP officials had declared the effort a success yet, pending the completion of the cementing and sealing of the well.

Allen said one ship that was pumping fluid into the well had run out of the fluid, or "mud," and that a second ship was on the way. He said he was encouraged by the progress.

"We'll get this under control," he said.

Allen also said that, later Thursday, an interagency team would release a revised estimate of how much oil had flowed from the well into the gulf before the "top kill" effort began. The Coast Guard had estimated the flow at 5,000 barrels a day, but independent estimates suggested it was much higher, perhaps tens of thousands of barrels a day.

For those who have frequented the Florida Panhandle for years, you already know that a Destin vacation isn't complete without a visit to the quaint beachside towns of the Beaches of South Walton.

There's Dune Allen, Santa Rosa, Blue Mountain, Grayton, Watercolor, Seaside, Seagrove, Watersound, Seacrest, Alys, Rosemary and Inlet beaches, each of which has their own unique architecture and feel.

Today I visited Seaside, where The Truman Show (the 1998 movie featuring Jim Carrey) was filmed. There were snow-cone vendors, a pizza bar and sandwich shop right by the beach!

There were even kayakers enjoying today's surf.

Destin Weather: Partly Cloudy and 85°F (29 °C)

Today for lunch, I ordered an ice cold lemonade, grabbed a table on the harbor-side porch at Harry T's and let the smooth sounds of a talented saxophonist carry my troubles away...

(Check out the saxophonist in the YouTube video below)

From the porch at Harry T's,you have the perfect view of Destin Harbor. You can watch the fishing boats bring in their catch and drool over the luxury yachts as they make their way to Crab Island. I know you've had your eye on that 45 foot Formula yacht with Tommy Bahama Caribbean Bay interior decor... do I know you, or do I know you?

I just wanted to report on last night's sunset. There's just something about the Destin sun setting against a swirled back-drop of yellows, pinks, oranges and reds that's... simply inspiring. No wonder so many singers (such as Jessica Simpson and Sheryl Crow) and even culinary artists (such as Emeril Lagasse) frequently visit Destin. In fact, Emeril was sighted the other day at the Marina Bar in Sandestin.

We have been very lucky that the oil spill has still had zero effect on our beautiful emerald green waters.... but it's even more comforting to know that no matter what happens, we'll still have our beautiful Destin sunsets. Not even the oil spill can take that away.

Cheers,

I've noticed media outlets have been offering too many sound bites and not enough facts! I'm sure you've noticed that everyone you talk to has different information and a different story about the oil spill. This is why I've provided a link to a really good and comprehensive infography about the oil spill.

You'll notice the huge economic impact that the oil spill has had on the tourism and sports fishing industry.

www.infographicworld.com/infographics/DeepwaterRig.jpg

You should notice on the map that fishing areas near Destin are open! Environmental factors are taking the oil away from our area. As you can see from the picture above, the coast is clear! So far, the oil spill has had zero impact on the beautiful beaches.

So keep this in mind when you call one of Crye-Leike Coastal's reservation specialists at (866) 356-5946.

Cheers,

Yes, this means no oil, no rip currents and no marine pests.

I just finished walking the docks and checking out the fishing boats and cabin cruisers. Did you know that Destin is the World's Luckiest Fishing Village?

Lucky is right, because it looks as if there is tons of activity going on despite the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Today, the marina is bustling! Families are renting wave runners, parasailing and walking the docks to enjoy the beautiful day.

Don't be selfish, you say? Share a little bit of the paradise I am describing, you say? Well, I did take a picture really early this morning on a walk, before the docks got too crowded.

So come on down to Destin, where sun, sand, sea-doos and boats are waiting for you!

I think I'm going to rent one of those wave runners... looks like a blast!

The beach bar is hoppin' today! Just a bit ago, I walked down to the Gulf from one of Crye-Leike Coastal's condos and decided to get an ice cold beverage. It looks like the beach bar is the place to be! Jen the bartender was making frozen margaritas for the adults and delicious virgin daiquiris for the kids - strawberry, mango, and banana! Nothing says summer like a frozen drink in my hand and a smile on my face.

Right beside the beach bar, there are two guys building the ultimate sandcastle. I'll upload a picture from my cell phone so you can check it out!

Now THAT's a sandcastle!

Call Crye-Leike Coastal at (866) 356-5946 to book your next Destin getaway...

I see it now... underneath an umbrella is an empty chair, with a frosty beverage in the cupholder... looks like the only thing missing is you.

Cheers,

Right now, I'm at beautiful Crab Island underneath the Destin Bridge. There are tons of boats enjoying the beautiful sunshine and warm weather.

My camera battery was low, but I just took a quick video of all of the boats here at Crab Island. Check it out below.

www.youtube.com/watch

As you can see, everything is normal - the sky is beautiful and the water is clear. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill hasn't affected Destin!

Don't miss out! Call (866) 356-5946 so you can book your next Destin vacation. You won't want to miss out on a beautiful day at Crab Island!

Alright, back to boating. We're about to put on a Jack Johnson CD and throw the football. Woohoo! Summer in Destin - gotta love it!

Cheers,

Well, I just got back from a trip to the Pacific ocean a few days ago... and while it may be true that “I wish they all could be California girls,” I wish they all could be Destin beaches!

I’m back in Destin today, and it’s great to be home! The oil spill is definitely a concern, but right now our beaches are completely unaffected.

I know what you’re thinking! You’re thinking of booking a vacation somewhere else... maybe Pickwick Lake, Heber Springs, Hilton Head in South Carolina, South Beach in Miami, or even the O.C. in California! Having been to all of those places, I know that those locales have a lot to offer... but as far as the beach is concerned - Destin has the best!

Indeed, there is no beach like Destin’s. Check out the pictures below that I just took. I’m having a blast down here on the Emerald Coast.

Right now, I'm listening to the cerulean waves crash on the sugary shores...

I can feel the sand between my toes and watch the dolphins play in the surf!

In a few hours, I'll be catching a glimpse of the sun as it sets against a sky swirled with pinks, oranges and yellows.

Oh, Destin. You’re irreplaceable!

Call 866-356-5946 today and book your next Destin getaway! You don’t want to be missing out, do you?

Cheers from a beach chair and umbrella in Destin (don't be jealous),

South Walton County will soon be the new home of some world class talent. Visitors will have a new attraction to enjoy and locals will benefit from new economic opportunities. Le Grand Cirque will bring entertainers from several different countries to Grand Boulevard in Sandestin.

As three Chinese strong men perform, a crowd sits mesmerized in front of Tommy Bahama at Grand Boulevard in Sandestin. But this performance is just a glimpse into Le Grand Cirque that will soon take up a new residence at Sandestin.

Simon Painter is the creative producer for Le Grand Cirque. He assures that “…we have the most incredible acts on earth. We have from contortionists to trapeze artists to incredible guys that ride on this wheel of death!”

And according to Howard Group’s Executive Vice President, John Heiser, it will forever change the entertainment scene in northwest Florida “..it creates a destination that can compete with a greater market. Before now people would come for the beaches. And they’re beautiful; it’s a wonderful place, but there’s not a lot of world class entertainment.”

Painter adds: “We really wanted to find another base for the show and we found northwest Florida. It has beautiful beaches, fun things to do, but it didn’t seem to have much live entertainment at night, so it seemed like the perfect fit.”

But the potential for economic growth could be a huge boost for Walton County.
The show itself will employ about 40 locals.

Heiser admits that “…we’ve already hired a marketing team. We’re putting a marketing team on the ground…all locals, all with marketing expertise in the area.”

Right now the only evidence of what’s to come is a sign, but soon there will be 65,000 square feet of tent right here behind Grand Boulevard.

Painter says the talent comes from all over the world, and that the entertainers are currently polishing Sandestin’s unique show: “I’m flying to China tomorrow to finish the show. It’s been in preparation for many, many months…”
