Once the kids go back to school and the days start to get shorter, Destin and the rest of Florida’s emerald coast becomes an even more appealing place to visit. Spring, specifically April and May, are the peak travel months and crowds file into town through July.
Fall is the best time to visit Destin, FL because crowds are lighter, prices are lower, temperatures are still high, and there is a ton to do around town.
The crowds start to thin out after July 4th, and after Labor Day travelers are few and far between. Traffic lightens up, the beaches empty, and getting into one of the area’s top restaurants is much less difficult. Destin in the fall offers a much more relaxing experience than during the peak travel season in spring and through the first half of summer.
Warm Temperatures & Waters
The fall is great because the air and water are still pretty warm and comfortable. During September and October, you’ll still feel temperatures up into the high 80s. The water of the Gulf of Mexico stays warm through October and into November after being warmed all summer long.
Once peak travel season is through, competition is lower for vacation rentals in Destin and prices typically reflect that. You can save when you travel during non-peak seasons and even snag a better rental because inventory will be more readily available. Search our vacation rentals based on date, desired amenities, or location.
The Occasional Rainstorm
While a rainstorm might not be the exact thing you want to experience, Destin and all of Florida’s emerald coast has a variety of indoor activities. Head to the Hurricane Lanes Bowling Center, Wild Willys Adventure Zone’s indoor arcade and 4D movie theater, or the Rock Out Climbing gym. Rainy days are also a great excuse to fully relax in your rental, read a good book, or splurge on some TV.
The fall is a great time to visit Destin because there are many events and festivals that take place this time of the year. Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation concert series does its fall run from September 12 through October 10 on Thursday evenings. All throughout October, the Fishing Rodeo takes place, which has been running for more than 70 years. If you’re not an avid angler, it’s still worth a visit to AJ's Seafood and Oyster Bar to watch the pros weigh-in their daily catch. Prefer to focus on eating your fish? The Annual Destin Seafood Festival is taking place the first weekend of October and is free to attend. The Baytowne Wharf Beer Festival and Harvest Wine and Food Festival also go on this month.
